What is Reverse Psychology?

Reverse Psychology is a  method of trying to make someone do what you want by asking them to do the opposite and expecting them to disagree with you.    It is a technique involving the change of mind by manipulating a person to do the opposite. Getting somebody do something you want by suggesting a different idea.

This works better when the other person is worked up and making emotional decisions rather than thinking things through. A common form of Reverse Psychology is to forbid an action. Doubt theory works wonders in Reverse Psychology, if they say they will do something and you doubt their capability, then they put all their might in doing this to actually prove you wrong.

Shakespearean Example

Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet

If you remember the story of two stars crossed  lovers Romeo and Juliet who met and fell in love. In normal circumstances would have dated each other and later found out they don’t really see a future for them the matter would have ended there. But something happened, that pushed them towards each other and made them fight till death for their love.  The thing was that both their families forbade the young lovers to see each other. Whenever somebody forbid us to do something our sense of freedom is endangered, our natural reaction is to rebel.

How to use Reverse Psychology on people

Original Sin
Original Sin

Not every person will respond to Reverse Psychology, for example those who lack self-confidence might actually take your defeating statement and make from them new limiting beliefs that makes them become even worse.

This technique can be successfully used with narcissists, stubborn people, Type A personalities and those who have inflated egos. Once you manage to challenge someone’s dormant ego without letting him notice that you’re doing it on intention you will able to make that person do whatever you want.

Actually this plays on the more sinister parts of our psychology that doesn’t want someone else to get what they want.

Bottom Line

Reverse Psychology works best on people who are not very happy and children who are trying to assert their own identities.  If Reverse Psychology used subtly and skillfully it can be one of the most effective tools in your Influence Arsenal. But you need to really know when Reverse Psychology will and won’t work. Some people require support and others require assistance. You know your loved ones better so use your instincts.
